How to Stop Feeling Like You're Always Behind (A 5-Minute Reset)
You wake up, and before your feet hit the floor, your brain is already racing:
You didn’t finish that thing yesterday. You’ve got back-to-backs starting at 9. You should’ve gotten up earlier. You’re already behind.
That feeling? It’s not just mental.
It’s your nervous system screaming that you’re in danger—because it can’t tell the difference between a missed email and an actual emergency. If you’re a high-achiever, this probably feels normal. But it’s not sustainable.
The good news? There’s a 5-minute reset I teach my clients that rewires this loop.
It’s not about doing more. It’s about changing your relationship with the pressure.
Here’s the system:
Step 1: Externalize the Chaos (2 minutes) Grab a blank sheet of paper and dump everything your brain is holding—unfinished tasks, half-formed thoughts, tiny worries. No organizing. No editing.
This instantly tells your brain: “I don’t have to keep spinning. It’s handled.”
Your mental RAM clears. Your pulse slows. Your prefrontal cortex comes back online.
Step 2: Apply the 2-Column Filter (2 minutes) Draw a line down the page. Label the left side: “Urgent and mine.” Label the right side: “Everything else.”
Go down your dump list and sort it. Be brutal.
Ask:
Does this really need to be done today?
Is this even mine to carry?
This simple sort cuts your stress load in half—because it pulls your attention out of threat mode and back into intentionality.
Step 3: Create a “Win List” (1 minute) Now take 3 items from your “Urgent and mine” column and rewrite them under a new heading: “What I will do today.”
That’s your win list.
Not your “should” list. Not your boss’s list. Yours.
When you finish one? Cross it off and say out loud: “Done.”
Train your system to recognize completion—not just urgency.
This whole process takes 5 minutes. No apps. No productivity hacks. Just your nervous system… finally getting what it’s needed all along: clarity and control.
You’re not behind. You’re overwhelmed by noise.
This is how you turn it down.
